Planned updates will expand the CARMA Kit’s functionality, providing an avenue for collaboration between sensors that creates an unprecedented ability to perceive the environment beyond the scope of baseline V2V communication. Behind this breakthrough communication concept are dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) radios, onboard units (OBU) with antennas, and a Spectra computer platform with a Robot Operating System (ROS) interface and software development kit. The additional integration of an optional NovAtel positioning system will introduce a higher degree of precision to overall performance. All CARMA Kit components and add-ons are fully compatible with AutonomouStuff Automated Research Development Platforms.
Integration of the CARMA Platform into an automated vehicle system is possible without the full complement of equipment included in the CARMA Kit. Vehicles equipped with fewer sensors are able to implement certain CARMA functionality. Additionally, vehicles equipped with at least one OBU capable of sending basic safety messages will be able to participate in cooperative automation by broadcasting their location to other vehicles that are capable of executing maneuvers.
